Lower Case Switcher Serial Port

Greetings, I'm trying to connect via serial to rj-45 to a Cisco Switch. I'm using the following:-Windows 7 Professional computer that has a serial port-Putty software-serial to rj-45 cable-Cisco Catalyst 2900 series XL switchMy Putty settings are the following:serial line com3speed 9600data bits8stop bits 1parity noneflow control noneI've tried to connect the RJ-45 to both the console connect and a port on the front and still not able to get a CLI.I did find this example on youtubeHe is using com3, where as Windows 7 Pro defaults to com1 and I'm not sure why he is using com1 or how to change it on the Windows side to com3.thanks. I had this same issue with a Cisco Catalyst 2960-C Series PoE. I was using Win 7 and a USB console cable.I installed the driver on my HD like normal and let it extract to its default location.I went to Start Devices and Printers and saw that my Cisco Serial was COM4 instead of COM1.

I right clicked my Cisco Serial (COM4) and selected Update Driver Software Browse my computer for driver software Let me pick from a list of devices on my computer and selected Cisco Serial. For some reason Win 7 was defaulting to a Default USB Serial Port driver instead of the needed Cisco Driver.I was able to console into my switch once I asked Win 7 to use the right driver. During the present time, many laptops no longer have serial ports on them so the USB to Serial adapters are needed. Someone told me one time that they were able to telnet into the LAN port of the router to get in and make minor changes on the WAN interface. I had this same issue with a Cisco Catalyst 2960-C Series PoE.

What is the current purpose? To get serial adapter working on win7 or to access to the switch? If you need to access the switch:1. Try to search for another pc (would be great if it will have built-in serial port) either linux (there you'll be able to run minicom) or windows xp (try first hyper-terminal instead of putty just to see whether it will work).2.

If you'll use adapter -a) check the drivers for it - and install correct onesb) every time you connect it - check device manager for com port number - it changes.3. Is the switch new - out of the box or was preconfigured - sometimes people who started to read CCNA course likes to change terminal speed - in such cases try different speeds for example 115004. Do you hear how switch is working when you power it on - may be it's not functional.5. Try to replace your console cable - maybe it's broken6. Do you see anything in your terminal software when you connect to the console port of the switch?Regards,Alex.

At work, we inherited an old (and I mean old) HP ProCurve 4000m 48+ port switch (although only a quarter of those will be used). This thing is a MONSTER. I'm pretty inexperienced in professional tier networking, and am attempting to get it configured. It has been reset to factory defaults, which means that it does not grab an IP or network mask for me to log into its management interface. According to the manual, I need to log into it via terminal to give it an IP.

The manual is vague on exactly HOW to do this, though. The terminal port on the switch appears to be a standard serial port, but a serial-to-RJ45 adapter came with the switch (The label on the adapter reads something like 'UTP Grounding Tap' if that's important to anyone). Now, assuming I plug a patch cable into that adapter and into my laptop, how do I proceed to get terminal access to the switch using my terminal emulation program (which happens to be xfce-terminal but I can use pretty much any linux terminal on it if it matters)?
